The Law of Attraction says you have to ask the universe for what you want, how does one go about this?

-Know what you want.
-Ask the universe for it.
-Feel and behave as if the object of your desire is on its way.
-Be open to receiving it.
Those are the steps. But, I’m confused about the second; what does it mean by “asking the universe”?

Is there any proof behind “the law of attraction”?
Those who have seen the documentary “The Secret” know that it’s main argument is the “law of attraction” stating that everything in our lives, good or bad, is attracted based on our personal alignment in the universe.
Is there any academic proof that supports this claim? I am talking about scholarly journals, scientific books, biological arithmetic and/or physics evidence or data that can provide any sort of proof behind their claims to be true. Even psychological or sociological data can used, just as long as it’s scholarly material.
Please keep in mind that I am not looking for discussion boards, websites, or articles of people tell their success stories. To me, that’s not scholarly material.
If you know of anything academic sources that have researched the law of attraction, could you please post them?
Have anybody actually try testing the law of attraction? What do you think about the Universe and AlmightyGod?
In the book the “The Secret”, It says that the law of attraction is like attracting whatever you think into your life. So whatever situation you are in now, you attract it into your life because of your pass thoughts. It also says that the Universe is like a genie; it’s like your wish is my command. You got to ask, believe, and receive. It’s similar to the bible. You pray to God and ask for whatever you want and you receive it when you get blessed. So I believe that God is the Universe.
